Jensen closed the door to Hollyâs office and mentally kicked himself for flirting with her. What had he been thinking? She was engaged and her fiancé was in the room next door.
Sex. Thatâs what heâd been thinking. Hot, sweaty, mind-blowing sex with Holly. Listening to her sighs of pleasure as he brought them both to ecstasy.
Ah, hell.
He wished he hadnât caught her staring with that sexy look on her face. A look that nearly undid him.
She wasnât interested in him. No way in hell. She was a loyal, honest woman who would never stray from her fiancé. Besides, he wasnât her type at all. He didnât do holidays. Or family. Hell, he had no family. What heâd had was a substance abusing mother and a dad who walked out on them. His mom had passed away years ago and he didnât give a shit whether his dad was dead or alive.
Christmas had never been a thing for him. His mother was either working or too drunk and full of pills to remember it was a holiday. He remembered the Christmas when his dad left. Heâd been young, but not too young that he wasnât excited about Santa coming. Heâd barely slept that night, anxious to wake up to presents under the tree. A video game, hopefully.
But, when he ran down the stairs Christmas morning he found his mom curled up on the sofa, passed out drunk and no presents under the tree. The disappointment and confusion heâd felt had quickly turned into anger when he saw the note crushed in his motherâs hand. It had been from his dad. The words still echoed through his head. The vague, hurtful words that destroyed his entire world. His dad had never been a big talker, but he could have been a man about leaving them and told them in person instead of walking out on the happiest day of the year with a few short words, âIâm sorry. I canât do this anymore. Please forgive me.â
What couldnât he do? Family? Kids? So many questions had run through his head, followed by tremendous pain and loss so he simply curled beneath the Christmas tree and bawled. His mother never did wake up and console him like good mothers did. No, she stayed drunk for the next nineteen years. Eight of which he spent with her, watching her slowly drink herself to death. She passed away while he was deployed. When he returned home he buried her in a cemetery with a service that consisted of him and the minister. There were hardly any assets to deal with so he sold what little she had, paid the late rent she owed and walked out of her dumpy apartment with one small present under his arm and never looked back.
That present, sloppily wrapped in faded Christmas paper still sat unopened in his closet. His mom had scrawled his name on the gift tag, but he never opened it. Why should he? He owed his mother nothing.
